t-shirts on the margins:
extra small, small, medium, media

Melbourne Design Week
16-17 May 2025

The T-shirts holds a significant place in fashion, whether it is derided as examples of the excess of fast fashion and heralding the ‘end of fashion’ (Edelkoort, 2015), its ubiquity and relative speed in making and production has made it useful actants in political protest movements (Tulloch, 2022) and building community for those that are socially marginalised (Colchester, 2003).

This activation explores the potential for the t-shirt to communicate and embody marginal experiences as a medium and actant. It includes an exhibition of interactive creative work that subtly imply Queer and Multicultural identities as well as a workshop where participants will be invited to alter an existing t-shirt to suit their own diverse bodies.
